Capability assessment and development strategy

Establishing a long-term asset management strategy and implementation roadmap for a global metro rail operator

Challenge

As part of an assignment to establish a long-term asset management strategy and implementation roadmap,  Arthur D. Little assisted one of the world’s leading global metro rail operators in establishing a strategy and plan for developing innovation and technology capabilities

Approach

Arthur D. Little conducted a strategic capability analysis, beginning with unbundling the already-established asset management strategic priorities into critical required know-how elements, both now and in the future.

These know-how elements were classified in terms of the required levels of mastery to be achieved, based on strategic importance and suitability for make/buy.

For critical elements, the current levels of mastery were assessed to provide a gap analysis. A detailed development plan and roadmap were prepared to set out how the gaps would be overcome

Value

Based on the analysis the client was able to put in place an effective and comprehensive capability development plan, covering both short and long term, to provide a key underpinning to enable effective implementation of its new long-term asset management strategy
